My Journey in Music & Data Analytics

From live music events to industry internships, my experiences reflect how I’ve grown at the intersection of business, creativity, and data analytics.

Data Analytics & Automation Intern

At The MLC, I worked on royalty distribution and metadata management, applying data analysis to support accurate songwriter and publisher payments. This role gave me exposure to the complexities of licensing workflows and the opportunity to apply data skills in a high-impact environment.

  • Matched millions of dollars in unpaid mechanical royalties to songwriters worldwide, ensuring accurate and timely distribution.

  • Worked with large datasets and reconciled metadata, gaining insight into end-to-end royalty distribution workflows and DSP integrations.

  • Expanded industry knowledge through cross-departmental sessions with Operations, Legal, and Marketing, developing a broad perspective on collective management.

  • Built Power BI dashboards for a capstone project using royalty data, Luminate, and Chartmetric to uncover listener trends and propose strategies for stronger reporting and engagement.

What I Learned:

This internship showed me how data integrity and reporting accuracy directly shape royalty distribution on a global scale. I strengthened my ability to reconcile large datasets and use Power BI to connect streaming and royalty data. I also gained insight into the automation systems that support efficiency and accuracy at scale. Beyond technical growth, I developed a clearer understanding of how the royalty ecosystem operates and how effective data management supports transparency across the music industry.

Insight Team Intern

During my internship with the Insight Team at Big Machine Label Group, I worked at the intersection of data and strategy, supporting decision-making across departments. My role combined hands-on data analysis with building tools that made insights more accessible throughout the label.

  • Compiled weekly reports on radio and streaming performance using Luminate and Mediabase, applying advanced Excel functions (VLOOKUP, XLOOKUP) to identify trends and track artist growth.

  • Built interactive Tableau dashboards and streamlined workflows with Tableau Prep, improving data accessibility and usability across the label.

  • Corrected and maintained artist metadata in OpenPlay and Chartmetric, ensuring accurate and consistent records across systems.

  • Proposed new dashboard designs and benchmarking methods that contributed to the label’s long-term data strategy.

What I learned:

This role gave me hands-on experience using Tableau Prep to integrate and clean large datasets and building Tableau dashboards that made insights more accessible across the label. I strengthened my ability to manage big data with advanced Excel functions and developed a clearer understanding of how streaming and airplay data reflect audience behavior. Through weekly reports and analysis, I saw how these metrics directly support artist growth and inform marketing, radio strategy, and business decisions.

A&R Intern & Global Partnerships Representative

At The Upstate Sound Label, I worked as an A&R with a focus on global partnerships, blending data-driven scouting with international recruiting initiatives. I was trusted by the CEO to establish and lead the company’s Global Partnerships program, where I developed SOPs, recruited international artists, and led meetings with partners worldwide to align cross-border strategies. In this role, I scouted new talent, analyzed data to guide promotional strategies, and strengthened the label’s global roster.

  • Utilized Chartmetric and market research to identify emerging talent and analyze KPIs that guided promotional campaigns.

  • Discovered and secured four Korean artists, two of whom signed during my internship with one pending, strengthening the label’s global roster.

  • Facilitated a sub-publishing agreement with one of Korea’s top sync and publishing companies.

  • Created marketing plans to expand artist visibility and reach within the U.S. market.

  • Reviewed artist contracts and agreements, supporting A&R negotiations and ensuring compliance with business standards.

What I Learned:

By developing the label’s global partnerships program from scratch, I learned how to think like an entrepreneur. With no roadmap and little guidance, I built a solid SOP and structure through trial and error, which strengthened my ability to take initiative, problem-solve, and create sustainable processes. Alongside this, I gained experience applying data analysis tools like Chartmetric to scouting and promotion, which showed me how data-driven insights and strong business structures work together to drive growth in the music industry.
